How to reach São Miguel Island, Azores:

The only way to reach the Azorean Archipelago is by plane. Daily flights arrive to 'João Paulo II' Airport, near the city of Ponta Delgada, coming from several countries in the European Continent, North America and from Madeira Archipelago (from Lisbon the flight takes about 2 hours).

For the participants who wish to arrange their flight reservations through the official travel agent 'Agência Melo', please fill in the Travel Agent Form (for further details please contact Agência Melo)

Transportation in Ponta Delgada

Getting from the Airport to your Hotel:

The airport is about 3 km from Ponta Delgada. The most common way to get to the city is by taxi (about 8 to 10 €). There is a bus to the city once every hour as well. An alternative is the transfer service that will be provided (on request) by the travel agent (available on the Travel Agent form; for further information please contact Agência Melo)

Getting from your Hotel to the Congress:

In spite of being the major city of the archipelago, it's center is relatively small. You can reach the University by foot quite easily from most of the hotels in the city (a map with the localization of the main hotels in the city will be available soon!). Ponta Delgada has a small system of public mini-buses that cover most of the city area (to download the map of the mini-bus routes click here; pdf file -  516 KB). Alternative means of transportation are taxis or rental cars (you can find several rental car agencies at the airport).

Lodging: Hotels & Hostels at Ponta Delgada:

University Campus:

Convenient, though modest accommodation is available at the University Campus (15 min walking distance from the Congress venue) (30 double rooms with private toilet and showers). The price per night/person ranges from 20(student status)/30 € for the double room, and 30(student status)/35 € for the single room. Breakfast not included. Reservations of these rooms will be provided on a first come basis and will be especially reserved for students (for more details please contact the congress secretariat).

  Hotels at Ponta Delgada:

Hotel accommodation (3 stars and 4 stars) will be provided in the city center of Ponta Delgada, all located within 10 min walking distance from the University and 5 min from/to João Paulo II International airport. All hotel reservations will be dealt with the official travel agent "Agência Melo" (please fill in the Travel Agent Form). For further details please contact Agência Melo.

Eating at Ponta Delgada

Throughout Ponta Delgada there are several restaurants and coffee shops where you can get from a full course meal to a light meal. In the University campus there is a restaurant where you can get a full course lunch at a price of about 5 €. There is a Student Canteen where you can have both lunch and dinner at about 2 €.

Ponta Delgada Weather in September

The Azores experience a warm and moist subtropical weather, due to the influence of the Gulf Current. The mean annual temperature range from 17ºC (Winter) to about 23º(Summer). It is still summer in September, but the weather during this month can be very unpredictable. Thus, it is advised for the participants to bring a set of warm clothes together with summer clothes (including a swimming suit, as the seawater during summer can reach tempting temperatures of about 26ºC). Most importantly, since heavy showers are typical during September, participants are advised to bring some sort of raincoat to protect from heavy rain (just in case!).

Currency

The Azores, one of the Portuguese archipelagos, are part of the European Union. Thus, the official currency is "Euros" (€). If you are from non-European Union country please mind to make the necessary exchanges at your local bank. However, credit cards (American Express, Visa, Master Card), or even ATM (check ATM card's permissions with your local bank) are valid throughout Ponta Delgada shops, travel agents, rental cars and restaurants. . ATM cash machines are common in Ponta Delgada and other major towns.
